One Tip A Day: Quicker Way To Remove iTunes Duplicates And Dead Tracks

  • Eric · 2 years ago
This product is horrible -- see recent user reviews on download.com. Basically, I downloaded the trial version, and like a lot of other people, all I did was waste my time. I would never purchase this product just on principle.

Agreed. After going through the trouble of downloading and analyzing your library this program will allow you to delete 3 songs unless you pay the 35$ license. Very obnoxious.

Try Duplicate Finder to find and delete duplicate files including mp3s/wma, Advance marking system lets you select files by date, size, and several other criteria. Duplicate files can be deleted, moved, or copied.

Duplicate Finder search duplicates using byte by byte or crc32 to give you most accurate and faster results.

Or even Better, get a Free tool that does the same:

    http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?27000000038018

Unfortunately, the publisher's site is gone - a crappy robot generated keyword rich page is there instead. Shame really, it's a great little program.

Certainly the best one i've used for duplicates.

Oh It makes VERY much sense having to pay for a program to do something that iTunes intentionally should be able to do *sigh*. F.Y. Apple and F.Y. whoever made this program just to charge people for it!!!

Go for donations instead, there are people who actually DO donate if the work is worth it, trust me! Mandatory charging for programs doing stuff that other programs should is not the way to go!

MediaMonkey has neat script which finds duplicates both by hash value or metadata. It does everything you want plus more. It even lets you transfer the playcount from the dups you delete to the ones you keep. Oh and it's free too:

I had a boatload of dead links and duplicates in my iTunes because I reinstalled it after rebuilding my c: drive due to a virus. I had my music on an external hard drive and moved it back to c:, that's where the trouble began.  I used iTunes Library Updater (free) at: http://itlu.ownz.ch/wordpress/  It worked well, but I had to keep rescanning the computer with it.  So, after a couple of days, I just found the iTunes data file, removed it and had iTunes recan my c: for music.  The only downside was I lost my playlists...but I was desparate.  iTunes really needs to improve it's software to allow removal of dead links and to be able to rescan and resync music on your hard drive.

Ignore these grumpy users.  Dupe Eliminator is a great product that I have use for over a year.  It does many, many things and obviously neither user has used it especially when comparing to iTunes dupe facility which is very weak.  Dupe Eliminator has flexible dupe criteria and also criteria to determine which file to kept as the orig (e.g. mp3 etc.).    Playlists are also support, UnDelete is great -- there are just many, many good features.  I don't mind if a user takes the times to use a product then comments on its pros and cons but some user are just looking to complain...

Thanks for this tip - this has been driving me nuts with duplicate music files in my iTunes library. This is very handy. iTunes library needs better software to manage the library and this should have been built in

I downloaded this program, and it removed precisely 3 songs from over 3000 dupes, and then said, that's it, now buy the full version.

    Waste of time!

Works as advertised, Freaking Awesome iTunes Tool
Pros: This app actually does what it says it does, it finds duplicate songs using more sophisticated criteria than the crappy feature that comes with iTunes. It seeks out dead links and duplicate entries. This is powerful stuff for squeezing the most space out of your ipod. After I was done I was able to get all of my music into my 30 gig iPod. Couldn't do that before running this app! I would say it is indispensable. Try it! Get it at http://www.markelsoft.com

Most of the software around will cost you between $30 and $50 to get the software and delete the duplicates.

    Here's a cheaper way for only $4.99
    Download mDelDupFile.

Try using mDelDupFile. You don't have to install any application. You just upload your exported duplicate list and you get back a bat file (or sh in Mac) that will remove all your duplicates.

You can also choose which tracks to keep (from your duplicates) by using your own decision criteria (such as keeping the best quality or the smallest files, etc)

And you can try it for free.
